This information applies to use of the MRC Epidemiology Unit’s Location and Activity Visualisation and Annotation (LAVA) tool and is additional to information included in the Unit’s Privacy Policy – https://www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk/privacy-policy/ and in the study specific privacy notice (if applicable).
The data we collect
Information we collect from you may include the following: GPS information from smartphones or other digital devices, activity information in the form of accelerometer data, heart rate data as well as activity annotation added by yourself from a list of available options presented via a website application.
Where does this data come from?
GPS activity will be provided by you from data collected on your smartphone or other digital devices. . Accelerometer information is gathered via activity devices, and the way we receive this dependent on the device being used. For example, for a Google Pixel watch this data will be given to us from Google securely using a Fitbit account name, whilst for a Unit supplied device this will be read by Unit staff when we receive the device from participants.
Why are we using the tool?
The LAVA tool will allow us to collect rich information on your activity. The information will be analysed with other information gathered to give us a better understanding of activity levels for different activities. It will also allow automatic labelling available in fitness monitors to be more accurate and useful.
The legal basis for processing your data
You will only be given access to the tool if you consent to use it. This means you should clearly understand what the tool offers and what will be expected of you before agreeing to take part. If anything is unclear, you can contact the study team for more information—they're here to help.
This tool is designed for individuals aged 18 and over.
You also have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. If you decide to do so, please reach out to the staff working on the specific study you’re involved in. Contact details should be provided as part of the study information.
Who do we share your data with?
Data sharing from this tool will be purely determined by the data sharing conditions agreed for those studies using the tool. No additional data sharing will occur from use of the tool itself.
How long do we keep your data?
The data retention policy of collected data is solely determined by the studies using the tool. Data is not retained longer than specified by these studies.
