NDNS - Information for researchers

NDNS results are formally reported via government. The latest and previous reports can be found at: www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-diet-and-nutrition-survey#current-ndns-results. Reports include appendices which give comprehensive details of the methods used in the NDNS.

A Data Resource Profile has been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology which provides information about the data and samples available from the NDNS Years  1 to11 (2008 – 2019) and prior surveys in the collection.

Key NDNS areas and methods currently include: collection of demographic, socio-economic and other questionnaire variables, dietary assessment via Intake24, physical activity data collection, height and weight, and nutritional biomarkers. Every 4 to 5 years the survey carries out a doubly-labelled water sub-study for the measurement of energy expenditure. Separate studies are carried out for the assessment of sodium intake using 24-hour urinary collection.

After results publication, NDNS data are deposited at the UK Data Service: www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/

Other valuable NDNS resources (such as blood and urine samples) can be requested through the NDNS Bioresource.
