MRC Epidemiology Unit Studies

Aims of the study

The aims of the SPEEDY study are to:

  • examine physical activity levels and dietary behaviour in a large population-based sample of British 9–10 year old children, and how they change over the transition to secondary school

  • investigate the individual and collective factors associated with (change in) these behaviours

Status

Field work is completed, on-going processing and data analysis work is focussed on longitudinal and SPEEDY-3 data (linking GPS, accelerometer and GIS data; analysis of dietary data; statistical analysis of determinants of change in physical activity and dietary behaviour).

Unit role

Unit led study conducted in collaboration with the School of Medicine, University of East Anglia. The Unit is responsible for data management.

Funding

A Unit held grant from the National Prevention Research Initiative funded the baseline. MRC core funding for 1 and 4 year follow-ups.
