MRC Epidemiology Unit Studies

Sedentary Time Validation Study

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal energy expenditure threshold for classifying sedentary time derived from combined heart rate and movement acceleration data, as routinely collected in the Fenland study. A sub-sample of 200 Fenland participants were asked to wear a posture monitor on their right thigh for 6 days (in addition to the combined sensor) and to simultaneously complete a brief log in which they record the time they go to sleep and get up as well as any episodes during which they had to take off the monitor.
