INTERPLAY

INTERPLAY Playground Study

Play is an important part of everyday life for children. Children are born with the natural desire to play and explore, and there are different ways children may play.

A type of play that we are particularly interested in is called ‘adventurous play’. This is play that is thrilling and children can try out challenging activities (e.g. climbing a tree). Most children enjoy adventurous play as it is fun, exciting and can help them feel good about themselves. It also helps with developing skills that support concentration in school and making new friends.

Study aims

In this playground study, we explored adventurous play in children: what they think about the way they play, what they enjoy about playing on the playground. We were also interested in hearing what parents think about the way their children play.

We partnered with Islington Play Association (IPA), a charity who oversees multiple adventure playground across North London and is a provider of open access adventure play services for children aged 6 years or above. We hosted an exciting play session for this study at Crumbles Castle Adventure Playground in June 2025.
